The reforms promoted by Mikhail Gorbachev in the Soviet Union destabilized the communist regime of the GDR, opening up a process that combined internal factors with international negotiations on the democratization of the GDR and the unification of the two Germanies. A method of inserting unified Germany into the international system was required that would boost European stability following the shift in the balance of power arising from the crisis in the Soviet empire, and the presence of a strong Germany at the heart of the continent. Access for the GDR to the institutional framework of the German Federal Republic resolved the international problem, but curtailed the democratization process begun in the GDR.
Las reformas impulsadas por Mijaíl Gorbachov en la Unión Sovié- tica desestabilizaron el régimen comunista de la RDA, lo que abrió un proceso que entretejió factores internos con las negociaciones internacionales en torno a la democratización de la RDA y el mé- todo de unificación de las dos Alemanias. Se requería una forma de inserción de la Alemania unificada en el orden internacional que contribuyese a la estabilidad europea ante el cambio del ba- lance de poder por la crisis del imperio soviético y la presencia de una Alemania fuerte en el corazón de ese continente. El acceso de la RDA al marco institucional de la República Federal Alemana resolvió el problema internacional, pero truncó el proceso de de- mocratización iniciado en la RDA. |
