International Relations teeters on the edge of an abyss of irrelevance. As an academic pursuit it has become disparate and fragmented. We have ceased to pursue greater clarity in the way that we understand the world around us; moreover, we have failed as agents of change that is, as purveyors of opinion and proposals about a better and fairer world order. As such, we no longer serve our students and those practitioners who seek our advice. The text outlines why and how International Relations teeters on the edge of an abyss. It offers a proposal for moving beyond the fragmentation and atomization that afflicts international relations. It also argues that global governance offers an opportunity to return to these questions.
Las relaciones internacionales se tambalean al borde de un abismo de irrelevancia. Como actividad académica se han vuelto desatinadas y fragmentadas. Hemos dejado de buscar mayor claridad en la manera como entendemos el mundo a nuestro alrededor; más aún, hemos fallado como agentes del cambio, es decir, como provisores de opinión y propuestas para un orden mundial mejor y más justo. Así, ya no asistimos a estudiantes y a aquellos profesionales que buscan nuestro consejo. Se describe por qué y cómo las relaciones internacionales bordean el abismo. Se propone cómo superar la fragmentación: la vuelta al debate de las grandes cuestiones. Y se sostiene que la gobernanza global ofrece una oportunidad para volver a estas interrogantes. |
