In Laberintos de justicia Víctor Gayol analyzed the minor offices that enable the Audiencia of Mexico to administer justice in the territories under its jurisdiction. Nevertheless, he did not pay attention to an office that played a crucial role in the colonial courts: the interpreters of indigenous languages. How many native languages were spoken in the Audiencia of Mexico? Were the interpreters Indians, Spaniards, or Mestizos? How did they develop their linguistic skills? This study identifies the interpreters who served the court of Mexico during the sixteenth Century in order to provide a chronology of the occupation of the office, as well as an analysis of the social and ethnic profile of its holders. This reflection highlights the process by which the institutions of the Spanish Empire sought to adjust themselves to the multilingual reality of America.
En Laberintos de justicia Víctor Gayol analizó los oficios menores que permitían que la Real Audiencia de México impartiera justicia en los territorios bajo su jurisdicción. No obstante, el historiador dejó a un lado un oficio de suma importancia para comprender el funcionamiento de esta institución: los intérpretes de las lenguas indígenas. ¿Cuántas lenguas autóctonas se hablaban en la Audiencia de México? ¿Quién desempeñó las funciones de intérprete? ¿Eran indígenas, españoles o mestizos? ¿En qué circunstancias estas personas llegaron a ser bilingües? Para contestar a estas interrogantes el presente trabajo analiza una serie de nombramientos de intérpretes otorgados por la Audiencia de México, así como las probanzas de méritos y servicios que algunos titulares enviaron al Consejo de Indias, de manera individual o colectiva, para dar a conocer su trabajo y solicitar mercedes. Gracias a esta documentación, se ofrece una cronología de la ocupación del cargo en el siglo XVI y un análisis del perfil social y étnico de sus titulares. Consideramos que esta reflexión permite entender mejor el proceso de adaptación de las instituciones del Imperio hispánico a la realidad plurilingüística del continente americano. |
