Descripción	The objective of this article is to analyze the oil trade and associated activities between Mexico and the United States between 1943 and 1950, the period during which the trade agreement signed in 1942 was in effect. This article identifies the products that were the object of this trade, the conditions under which the trade agreement was developed, how it evolved over the course of this period and if there were changes in trade concentration as a result of this agreement. It also explains the reasons for these changes due to the needs of the Mexican and American economies, using this case to evaluate the opportunities and limitations of the 1942 trade agreement. This article is based on statistics taken from Mexico’s National Bank of Foreign Trade and General Statistics Department; contemporary Mexican and American documents, especially those of a diplomatic nature; and secondary literature. This article is the first analysis of the oil trade between Mexico and the United States during the 1940s, as the literature on the history of the industry centers on the 1938 oil expropriation and the subsequent diplomatic negotiations. El objetivo del artículo es analizar la compraventa de petróleo y sus derivados entre México y Estados Unidos desde 1943 hasta 1950, mientras estuvo vigente el tratado comercial que ambos países firmaron a finales de 1942. En el texto identificamos los productos involucrados en dicho comercio, las condiciones en las que éste se desarrolló en el marco del tratado, cómo evolucionó su intercambio durante el periodo y si hubo cambios en la concentración comercial a raíz del acuerdo. Asimismo, explicamos el porqué de dicha trayectoria en función de las necesidades de las economías mexicana y estadounidense y, con base en este caso, valoramos las oportunidades y limitaciones que trajo consigo el tratado de 1942. El artículo se fundamenta en estadísticas mexicanas del Banco Nacional de Comercio Exterior y la Dirección General de Estadística, en documentación mexicana y estadounidense de la época, sobre todo de carácter diplomático, así como en bibliografía secundaria. Se trata del primer análisis que se emprende sobre el comercio petrolero de México con Estados Unidos durante los años cuarenta, pues la bibliografía sobre historia del petróleo se centra en la expropiación de 1938 y en las negociaciones diplomático políticas posteriores.
