This article is based on the reconstruction of the naturalization documents issued by Mexican governments over the course of nearly two centuries. This information is used to explore the quantitative dimension of naturalization policy during the first half of the 20th Century. How many foreigners were naturalized and what were their national origins? What was the distribution by sex, marital status, place of residence and occupation? Was the number of naturalized foreigners increased by policies that created exceptions benefitting certain groups of immigrants? Is it possible to find correlations between new migratory flows and the management of naturalization policy? Did changes in immigration policy affect the number of naturalizations? Among others, these questions guide the article's quantitative research into the naturalization of foreigners in decades that saw record naturalization rates despite the powerful nationalism that shaped the most restrictive immigration policies in Mexican history.
Este trabajo se funda en la reconstrucción de la serie histórica de cartas de naturalización expedidas por los gobiernos mexicanos a lo largo de casi dos siglos. Sobre esta base se explora la dimensión cuantitativa de la política de naturalización de extranjeros durante la primera mitad del siglo XX. ¿Cuántos extranjeros se naturalizaron y cuáles fueron sus orígenes nacionales? ¿Cuál fue la distribución por sexo, estado civil, lugar de residencia y ocupación? ¿El volumen de naturalizados fue engrosado por regímenes de excepción en beneficio de ciertas comunidades de inmigrantes? ¿Es posible encontrar correlaciones entre nuevos flujos inmigratorios y la gestión de la política de naturalización? ¿Los cambios en las normas sobre migración y extranjería impactaron en las naturalizaciones? Entre otros, estos interrogantes guiaron una investigación interesada en cuantificar el universo de extranjeros naturalizados en unas décadas en que se registraron los más altos índices de naturalización, a pesar del poderoso nacionalismo que impulsó las políticas de extranjería más restrictivas que conoció México. |
