Descripción	During the festivities of the virgin of Guadalupe in 1795, a group of criollos garnished a balcony in Mexico City in order to discredit the cathedral's canon, Mariano Beristain. The reason for this quarrel was the recent homage paid by Beristain to Spain's ministers' chief, Manuel Godoy, who had been accused of insulting religion and devotion to the virgin. The complaints filed with the Inquisition against Beristain afford the possibility of observing some of informal channels of expression at a time when there was a tightening of the control over the press. Moreover, these complaints illustrate the fierce dispute over control of public opinion in Mexico City at the end of the eighteenth century. En la celebración de la fiesta de la virgen de Guadalupe de 1795 un grupo de criollos adornó un balcón de la ciudad de México con la intención de desprestigiar al canónigo de la catedral, Mariano Beristáin. La causa del enfrentamiento era el homenaje que Beristáin había rendido poco antes al jefe de ministros de España, Manuel Godoy, y que muchos tacharon de injurioso a la religión y a la devoción guadalupana. Las denuncias presentadas ante la Inquisición contra Beristáin ofrecen la posibilidad de observar algunos de los canales informales de expresión en un momento en el que el control de la imprenta se había recrudecido, así como la intensa pugna por el control de la opinión pública en la ciudad de México a finales del siglo XVIII.
