One of the concerns that arise when one thinks of the current environmental crisis is that man has lost control over the setting in which he lives. Space, which is becoming increasingly urbanized, forces major adaptation processes to be set in train, but is also open to undertaking the changes designed to make it more sustainable. This situation encourages us to rethink the relationship between society and space. This document explores the role of space and the environment in the sociological literature, since its importance has grown in the wake of the transformation of studies on the urban phenomenon in recent decades. In particular, this review seeks to investigate how the authors have answered the question: To what extent is space a cause or an effect of the city’s social configuration?The problem has been present throughout the intellectual, philosophical, scientific andsociological tradition interested in the physical configuration of human societies, particularlyamong the forerunners of current environmentalism, which have highlightedthe role of space in the reality of living things.
Una de las preocupaciones que surgen al pensar en la crisis ambiental actual es que el hombre ha ido perdiendo control sobre el entorno en el que vive. El espacio, cada vez más urbanizado, hace necesario realizar importantes procesos de adaptación, aunque también es susceptible de ser transformado para hacerse más sostenible. Se trata de una realidad que estimula a repensar las relaciones entre sociedad y espacio. En este documento se emprenderá un recorrido sobre el papel del espacio y del medio ambiente en la literatura sociológica, pues su importancia se ha acrecentado a partir del giro espacial que han experimentado los estudios sociológicos sobre el fenómeno urbano en las últimas décadas. En particular, con esta revisión se pretende investigar cómo han respondido los autores a la pregunta: ¿en qué medida el espacio es efecto o causa de la configuración social de la ciudad? La problemática ha estado presente en toda la tradición intelectual, filosófica, científica y sociológica interesada en el modo de configuración física de las sociedades humanas y, en particular, entre los antecesores del ecologismo actual, que han dado relevancia al papel del espacio en la realidad de los seres vivos. |
