This work goes through the history of how this medical community service was created and organized, including documents such as students' reports and results obtained by these young doctors in factories, mines, and rural areas. El establecimiento del servicio médico social puede comprenderse como una parte importante de las políticas sociales cardenistas que intentaron expandir los servicios básicos a todos los sectores sociales del país. Asimismo, representó una lucha por la consolidación del poder presidencial y del Partido Nacional Revolucionario, sobre todo ante uno de los grupos que desde el estallido de la Revolución mexicana se había distinguido por su conservadurismo, el de los estudiantes de la Universidad de México. Este artículo hace un recuento de la historia de la implantación del servicio médico social, de su organización, de los reportes de los estudiantes y de los resultados de las actividades que los jóvenes médicos llevaron a cabo en las fábricas, las regiones rurales y las mineras del país.
