| description | This article analyzes the role of the family in the Paraguayan War as a paradigmatic case of nineteenth century Latin American wars, albeit one that possesses its own particularities. It shows how, over the course of the war, gender relations were upset and family and household structures were disarticulated. One particularity here was the early involvement of women in the war economy, giving continuity to an already existing tradition of cottage industries and trade. Another aspect unique in contemporary Latin America was the displacement of families from their homes to faraway places and strict control over their economic and political activities. This was accompanied by a practice of shared family responsibility. |

En este artículo se analiza el papel de la familia en la Guerra del Paraguay como caso paradigmático de las guerras latinoamericanas del siglo XIX, que, además, tiene algunas particularidades. Se muestra cómo, en el curso de la guerra, se transtornaron las relaciones de género y se desarticularon las estructuras de las familias y de los hogares. Una particularidad paraguaya fue el temprano involucramiento de las mujeres en la economía de guerra, dando continuidad a una ya constituida tradición de economía familiar y de comercio. Otra singularidad del caso paraguayo en el contexto latinoamericano contemporáneo fue el desplazamiento de las familias de sus hogares a lugares lejanos y el control estricto de sus actividades económicas y políticas. Esto iba de la mano de una práctica de una política de corresponsabilidad familiar.
