| Résumé: | The concert held by the Mexican Philharmonic Society on October 1, 1867, was attended by Benito Juárez and, among many other pieces, included the premiere of the symphony-hymn Dios salve a la patria by Melesio Morales (1838-1908). This article describes the interesting technical details of this extraordinary piece, situating it in the broader context of the political struggles of the conservative members of the Philharmonic Society during the early years of the Restored Republic. The evening’s full program has been reconstructed in order to read, through the opera selections performed, the social and political discourse that the Philharmonic Society wished to give Juárez, with the goal of obtaining a critical subsidy and a building for its conservatory.
