| description | This article analyzes the complete corpus of sermons and speeches published by Agustín Rivera between 1854 and 1916. The objective here is to precisely identify the way in which this author articulated the juncture between tradition and modernity and between Catholic theology and liberal ideology from the pulpit and the podium, following his education and career as a public speaker in order to identify both the commonalities and differences contained in these texts, as well as the paradoxes of his social project, in particular with respect to the principle of equality. By examining his corpus as a whole, it is possible to recognize an attempt to integrate the principles of modernity into theology, granting certain autonomy to the spheres of politics and science, yet maintaining gender, ethnic and class hierarchies, as well as the subordination of art to morality. |

En este artículo se analiza el corpus completo de sermones y discursos publicados por Agustín Rivera entre 1854 y 1916. Nuestro objetivo es identificar de manera precisa la forma en que el autor articulaba tradición y modernidad, teología católica e ideología liberal, desde el púlpito y desde la tribuna. Para ello, hacemos un recorrido por su formación y trayectoria como orador, para luego identificar tanto las diferencias como los elementos comunes de esos textos, así como las paradojas de su proyecto social, en particular respecto del principio de igualdad. En el conjunto del corpus es posible reconocer un esfuerzo de integrar los principios de la modernidad en la teología, de forma que se concedía cierta autonomía a las esferas política y científica, pero se mantenía la sumisión del arte a la moral, así como diferencias jerárquicas de género, de etnia y de clase.
