El propósito del presente artículo se basa en la demonstración y la explicación del fenómeno de contrabando en la Capitanía General de Guatemala en el siglo XVIII. En el trabajo se explica por cuales razones surgió en dicha entidad administrativa ese proceder y como se desarrollaba. Además en el texto se analiza el comercio clandestino no sólo como un suceso económico pero también como social, basado en las redes que se componían de los individuos provenientes de varias clases socioeconómicas hispanas y extranjeras.
