| description | Based on previously unseen documentation from the archives of the former Soviet Union, the United States and to a lesser extent Mexico, this article aims to analyze the process of rapprochement between Mexico and the USSR between 1959 and 1962. In particular, this text shows how, during the end of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1960s, a series of factors created the first opportunity for a possible rapprochement between the two countries since the beginning of the Cold War in 1947. At the same time, this article shows how Mexico’s strong economic dependence on the United States, the context of Cold War polarization and Soviet difficulties in projecting their economic influence in the region finally dissuaded the López Mateos administration from consolidating its rapprochement with the USSR. |

Basado en documentación inédita procedente tanto de archivos de la ex Unión Soviética, como de Estados Unidos y, en menor medida, de México, este artículo tiene como objetivo analizar el proceso de acercamiento entre México y la URSS, entre 1959 y 1962. En particular, este texto mostrará cómo, entre el final de la década de 1950 y el principio de los años sesenta, una serie de factores crearon por primera vez desde el comienzo del conflicto bipolar en 1947 las condiciones para un posible acercamiento entre los dos países. Al mismo tiempo, el trabajo mostrará que la fuerte dependencia comercial mexicana de Estados Unidos, el contexto de polarización de la Guerra Fría y las dificultades soviéticas en proyectar su influencia económica en la región disuadieron, en última instancia, la administración de López Mateos de concretar el posible acercamiento con la URSS.
