El 27 de enero de 1846, durante el gobierno de Mariano Paredes y Arrillaga, se expidió una Convocatoria que proponía un método electoral completamente original para elegir un congreso extraordinario: prescindir de la representación de individuos para privilegiar los intereses funcionales de clase. Ningún gobierno representativo moderno en el mundo había experimentado con un sistema similar. Este artículo analiza las particularidades de este sistema electoral, da cuenta de las elecciones que se llevaron a cabo y explora el comportamiento del congreso constituyente extraordinario que se instaló en junio de 1846 y sesionó hasta los primeros días de agosto del mismo año.
