| description | Shortly after the official declaration of independence in 1821,Mexicobecame a constitutional monarchy. This turned out to be only a brief experience due to the lack of a social agreement regarding the political system to be adopted. The establishment of the First Empire offers meaningful clues about the different political concepts and traditions in force at the time and the corresponding conflicts. By investigating the symbology of the coronation ceremony of Agustín I, this paper seeks to evince that the said ceremony was characterized by an ambivalent political content. This indicates that the First Empire was a failure from its foundation, which allows us to appreciate the unfinished struggle between absolutism and the republic and between the old and the new concepts of society. |

Poco tiempo después de la declaración oficial de independencia en 1821, México se constituyó como monarquía constitucional. Ésta no llegó a ser más que una experiencia fugaz, debido a la falta de un acuerdo social sobre el sistema político a adoptar. La propia instauración del Primer Imperio ofrece pistas significativas sobre los diferentes conceptos y tradiciones políticos vigentes y los conflictos al respecto. Por medio de una investigación sobre la simbología de la ceremonia de la coronación de Agustin I, en el presente artículo se intenta mostrar que dicha ceremonia de investidura representó un acto caracterizado por ambivalencia en lo que a su contenido político respecta. Lo anterior apunta a que el Primer Imperio fue un fracaso desde su instauración, la cual permite apreciar la pugna inconclusa entre el absolutismo y la república y antiguos versus nuevos conceptos de la sociedad.
