Las relaciones hispanomexicanas entraron en una nueva etapa durante el porfiriato. Los cambios experimentados por el contexto internacional y el tema de Cuba condicionaron dichas relaciones y determinaron que éstas entraran en una fase de normalización, marcada por el final de las pretensiones intervencionistas de España en México. El nuevo clima facilitó la progresiva resolución de los contenciosos bilaterales existentes entre ambos países y permitió a la influyente colonia española en México desarrollar sus actividades en un marco de garantías.
