Description
Summary:This article is a contribution to the knowledge of conventional politics in the Mapuche movement, concretely through the study of the case of Wallmapuwen party. This party has more than 10 years of history but for most of its history has not been electorally recognized by the Chilean state. We show the causal mechanisms that hinder the emergence of ethnic parties in unfavorable contexts. Besides, we aim to demonstrate the importance of improving the definition of ethnic parties in order to take into consideration not legally recognized political organizations that participate in electoral stances through different strategies. As a consequence, we propose a new ethnic party definition that includes this type of organizations. This is a qualitative study, based on secondary data analysis, observation, and semistructured interviews.
