En este artículo se enfoca el celibato en función de los cambios que ha experimentado el lugar que ocupan éste y el matrimonio en las estructuras culturales y sociales; intenta además situar la cuestión del celibato en un marco más amplio en el que se entiendan la autonomía personal y la soledad en diversos contextos socioculturales. El análisis se sitúa en dos diferentes niveles: el individual, para examinar la transición entre la soltería y el matrimonio, las diferentes maneras en que se realiza esa transición, las prácticas reales y las normas culturales que la rigen, y el institucional, para determinar el lugar que ocupan los célibes en las estructuras familiares, así como su participación en la división familiar del trabajo y de las funciones.
