| description | This article describes how the basic characteristics of the migratory flow between Mexico and the United States evolved between April 1993 and November 1995, emphasizing changes in volume, socio- demographic traits, the labor market, and familial and social links with the places of arrival and departure in both countries. This article places particular emphasis on California, which is not only the principal destination of Mexican immigrants but also the North American state which best illustrates the tensions between a series of anti-immigrant policies and the economy's reliance on an immigrant labor force. California is also the state which has most consistently enforced these measures, thereby becoming an area where Federal policies, such as strengthening border control coexist with state measures such as the bill known as 187. This paper also posits a series of hypotheses on the short-term impact of US immigration policy. |

Este trabajo presenta la evolución de las características básicas de los flujos migratorios entre México y Estados Unidos para el periodo comprendido entre abril de 1993 y noviembre de 1995, enfatizando las modificaciones que estos flujos han sufrido en cuanto a su volumen, perfil sociodemográfico, mercado laboral y vínculos familiares y sociales con sus lugares de salida y llegada en ambos países. Asimismo, se hace especial énfasis en el estado de California, el cual no solamente es el principal destino de los mexicanos, sino que además es el estado dela Unión Americanaque muestra más claramente las tensiones debidas a una serie de medidas antiinmigrante y la dependencia de su economía de la mano de obra migrante; además se ha caracterizado por la instrumentación más consistente de esas medidas, y por ser el escenario en el cual se combinan las adoptadas por el gobierno federal, como es el fortalecimiento en el control de la frontera, aunado a aquéllas de carácter estatal, entre éstas, la propuesta de ley conocida como 187.Este trabajo permite fundamentar varias hipótesis acerca de los impactos a corto plazo de la política migratoria estadunidense.
