Los autores presentan un análisis de la familia mexicana en Estados Unidos destacando su complejidad. Ésta se expresa en los rasgos que la distinguen del país de origen y del de destino y también por los cambios que se hacen patentes por la influencia del tiempo. Los autores buscan conocer la composición del parentesco en las familias emigrantes, su evolución en función del ciclo de vida y la interacción de los calendarios civiles y migratorios. Hacen también referencia a las modificaciones familiares vinculadas al proceso migratorio, a los cambios que tienen lugar en el calendario civil de uniones o nacimientos, a las transformaciones suscitadas por la influencia de eventos laborales o matrimoniales y al tipo de decisiones migratorias que se construyen en los ámbitos familiares.
