The risks of the current stage of modern society no longer result from fate, but from decisions taken within a wide array of options, where science, politics, industry, markets, and capital play leading roles. We no longer worry about what the ruthless forces of nature might do to us, but about what we humans might be doing to nature, and about how the damage inflicted on the natural world becomes damage on ourselves. Current risks result from the end of tradition and its certainties: the less we trust in the traditional security system, the more risks we must deal with in our everyday lives.Beck explores current society as a product of ecological and social risks, the effects of which threaten its very viability, not only in the long run, but also in more immediate temporal settings. |

Ulrich Beck sintetiza en este artículo su interpretación de la sociedad moderna, Para él, ésta debe considerarse como una sociedad de riesgo. Este tipo de sociedad, que parece instaurarse aceleradamente en el mundo contemporáneo, nace de lo que diversos autores consideran como la muerte de la naturaleza y la tradición. Los riesgos de la etapa actual de la sociedad moderna ya no son productos del destino, sino más bien de la toma de decisiones y de un amplio abanico de opciones en el que están de por medio la ciencia, la política, la industria, los mercados y el capital. Ahora empezamos a preocuparnos no de lo que las fuerzas incontroladas de la naturaleza pueden hacernos a los humanos, sino de lo que los humanos le hacemos a la naturaleza, y de la forma en que los daños al mundo natural se convierten en daños contra el hombre mismo. Pero además, los riesgos del momento actual aparecen para este autor como una consecuencia del fin de la tradición y del conjunto de sus certidumbres. En la medida en que confiamos menos en el sistema tradicional de seguridad, tenemos que negociar con un número mayor de riesgos en nuestra existencia cotidiana.Beck explora y concibe a la sociedad actual en este artículo como producto de riesgos ecológicos y riesgos sociales cuyos efectos amenazan su propia viabilidad, ya no sólo en el largo plazo sino también en escenarios temporales más inmediatos.
