Descripción
Sumario:This article studies the portrayal of food in premodern Japan’s haikai poetry through kigo, words used to denote a season of the year. The purpose of this study is to analyze, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the complex relationship between the haikai (particularly those of the Japanese poet Matsuo Bashō), the food as it was both consumed and imagined during the Edo period, as well as the sociocultural and poetic elements associated to the kigo. The work highlights how kigo are key elements used to evoke thoughts and sensations that take the reader to multidimensional places and times, and which offer plentiful interpretations.
