Description
Summary:The aim of this paper is to propose a unified account of the grammatical behavior of Mexican Spanish pronominal clitics, both reflexive and non reflexive. In the first place, I comment on the structure of the verbal word that includes clitics. In second place, I show that these clitics behave either like pronouns or like syntactic agreement markers, and I describe the conditions that favor one behavior or the other. And in third place, after depicting the functional versatility of reflexive clitics, I go on to propose four general uses: 1) as syntactic agreement marker when they express reflexive and reciprocal meaning, 2) as voice marker (whether impersonal active, passive, anticausative or antipassive), 3) as marker of subjectively affected participant and 4) as marker of perfective aspect in transitive constructions conveying a sense of accomplishment.
