| Resumo: | The Western Sahara issue, which for decades has set Morocco, Algeria and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) against each other, is a regional conflict that impacts on their relations in other spheres, such as Latin America. Diplomacy by the Maghrebi states has sought the support of Latin American countries in defending their positions in international forums. While Morocco, taking an irredentist position, asserts the Moroccan identity of the Saharan region, Algeria and the SADR favor the self-determination of the territory. This diplomatic approach to the continent draws attention to ideological affinities, the promotion of shared cultural ties and the search for more stable commitments to the recognition of the SADR by countries in the region.
