| Résumé: | The purpose of this article is to analyze the evolution of mortality in Mexico during this century, especially as of the year 1940. First of all, some considerations are put forward regarding the sources of information and the reliability of the indicators, and the parameters for mortality which, in our opinion, best reflect the evolution of this phenomenon, are presented. Next, the development of the phenomenon is examined in terms of level and structure by age, sex, and cause of death. Then the decrese in mortality is placed within the country's historical context, and other transitions in mortality are discussed. Lastly, some differentials within the country are evaluated and an assessment is made of the extent of what has been called "Mexican excess mortality. "
