En el curso de sus peripecias, don Quijote y Sancho se topan con personajes en los que se contemplan y, recíprocamente, se ven contemplados, en los que atisban rasgos de su personalidad y, a la par, notorios contrastes, con los que afirman su identidad y los que les permiten modificar su conducta, sondear otras posibilidades de desarrollo y de actuación, evolucionar, en suma, psicológicamente. El objetivo que persigue el presente estudio no es otro que analizar esta estrategia en la construcción de personajes. Se centra en la figura del hidalgo manchego tal y como se presenta en la Primera parte, en sus careos con el ventero socarrón, en el caballero cortesano Vivaldo, en Ginés de Pasamonte, en Cardenio y en el canónigo de Toledo.
