This article aims to provide a monographic study of this motif, collating the ancient texts of these ballads, together with the versions collected from the modern oral tradition. Specifically, it proposes to analyse the function and meaning of this motif, to trace its temporal, geographical, and linguistic evolution, to establish possible affiliations regarding origin and to detect whether types and subtypes can be identified in the compositions that recover the motif. |

En ciertas versiones tradicionales de cuatro romances épicos, “El rey moro que reta a Valencia”, “Valdovinos sorprendido en la caza”, “La pérdida de don Beltrán” y “Gaiferos libera a Melisenda”, se produce el hecho maravilloso de que el caballo del héroe adquiere la capacidad de hablar. El objetivo de este artículo es estudiar de forma monográfica tal motivo, cotejando las versiones antiguas de estos romances y los testimonios recopilados de la tradición oral moderna. En concreto, se pretende analizar su función y significado, rastrear su evolución temporal, geográfica y lingüística, establecer posibles filiaciones de procedencia y comprobar si en las composiciones que recuperan el motivo pueden identificarse tipos y subtipos.
