En primer lugar, haremos una reflexión crítica sobre las propuestas que han catalogado ser y estar en esta índole de estructuras como verbos predicativos o como meras cópulas. Posteriormente, nos centraremos en los dos objetivos básicos de este artículo: 1) la caracterización de ser/estar más esta clase de sintagma locativo como un tipo de predicado complejo distinto de los que se conforman con los denominados verbos ligeros, y 2) la compatibilidad de estos predicados con la naturaleza eventiva o no eventiva de sus sujetos.
