El presente trabajo busca rescatar una lectura autobiográfica del Retrato del artista en 1956 de Jaime Gil de Biedma. Intentaré demostrar que la lectura autoficcional que ha predominado a partir de la publicación del estudio de Javier Blasco (1996) ha propiciado la omisión de temas importantes ligados a la homosexualidad, a la prostitución y a la explotación sexual de menores. Se verá que el análisis de estos asuntos, relegados por la mayoría de la crítica al terreno extratextual, es básico para comprender la propuesta literaria del autor.
