En el presente artículo se plantean tres objetivos. En primer lugar, se examinan los problemas concernientes al concepto de pluricentrismo, así como las dificultades que depara la definición del español como lengua pluricéntrica. En segundo lugar, se discute la relación entre unidad y pluricentrismo en la llamada política lingüística panhispánica, teniendo en consideración los discursos académicos acerca de la estandarización. En tercero y último lugar, se analiza cómo los conceptos de unidad y panhispanismo forjados en el ámbito académico se reflejan en la configuración de la norma panhispánica y en su presentación y tratamiento a cargo de la RAE.
