Se considera la hipótesis propuesta por Antonio Alatorre de que voces como pedinche, lloriche, etc., son híbridos de raíz española y sufijo nahua, frente a la de Juan M. Lope Blanch, de que se trata de formaciones “caprichosas” del español de México. Tras una revisión de los vocablos listados en los diccionarios con las terminaciones -che, -i(n)che, se propone la tesis de que se trata de casos de fonosimbolismo.
