| Sumario: | Reception: July 23, 2016Accepted: March 28, 2017Alejandro Magariños Cervantes (Montevideo, Uruguay, 1825-1893) throughout his prolific career as poet, narrator and essayist, attempted to reach out to readers were not familiar with the kind of Spanish he used. With this aim in mind, he annotated his poems with explanations of regional words. Magariños also inserted explanations into his narratives and essays. He additionally put together a small thematic vocabulary with words taken from the world of the gauchos. His lexicographical work, which is an off-shoot of his own romantic writing, is the main subject of this article.
