Résumé:Starting from a historical and philological close reading of a passage fromBernal Díaz del Castillo’s Historia verdadera de la conquista de la Nueva España,I try to show the surprising modernity of the conqueror-colonizer in hisappraisal of labor. I argue that Bernal’s image of colonial society can beexplained by a remembrance of a flourishing Castile, based on wool production,just as he experienced it in the Medina del Campo of his youth.
