Llegó muy joven a Nueva España; aquí se educó y regresó a España donde tuvo mucho éxito como dramaturgo. Discípulo fervoroso de Góngora, fue un poeta muy innovador en el aspecto métrico. Sor Juana lo siguió muy de cerca, al grado de que algunos de los hallazgos métricos de Salazar y Torre se han adjudicado a la monja, y no sería injustificado decir que parte del gongorismo de sor Juana proviene no de Góngora directamente, sino de Salazar y Torres.
