| Sumario: | The romance of Gaiferos frees Melisendra, still a part of the Pan-Hispanic oral tradition, was published in many xvith Century broadsheets and Cancioneros, an editorial success that culminated with its appearance in Cervantes’ Don Quixote. In this article I propose that beyond utilizing the Gaiferos’ romance to create the extraordinary and amusing chapter on Master Peter’s puppet show, the romance plays a very important role in the development of don Quixote’s character when his trajectory as a knight-errant is in crisis. |
