En este artículo se estudia el desarrollo de la ambigüedad espíritu/materia en La Regenta, mediante la descripción comparativa entre la torre de la Catedral y don Fermín de Pas, desde una perspectiva pragmática. Mientras la torre de la Catedral es un símbolo disémico sólo en la primera parte de la narración, don Fermín es un personaje ambiguo hasta el final de la obra. Por medio de la descripción comparativa de la torre de la Catedral con don Fermín, el autor aúna semánticamente lo material con lo espiritual, cuyo contraste constituye el armazón de todo el relato de Clarín, lo que ofrece al mismo tiempo la base para criticar ferozmente a la Iglesia.
