ThisAmerican lexical creation has gone unnoticed by scholars of Spanish inthe Americas probably because of the semantic change and the vitality andextension that it acquires in modern usage, especially during the twentiethcentury. Finally, a modification of its definition in the current academicdiccionary is proposed. |

A partir del análisis de la historia léxica y lexicográfica de la palabra camiseta,este trabajo muestra que es un americanismo que se documenta desde el siglo XVI hasta la segunda mitad del siglo xix, sólo en el español de América,con el significado de ‘camisa o vestido de indio’. Esta creación léxica americana ha pasado desapercibida para los estudiosos del español de América,probablemente por el cambio semántico que experimenta y por la vitalidad y extensión que adquiere su acepción moderna, sobre todo durante el siglo xx. Se propone, por consiguiente, una enmienda en la definición del diccionario académico.
