Un panorama histórico-literario y crítico sobre el autor y la obra introduce este estudio de la tradición clásica en la Hernandia. A continuación, se examinan la presencia, carácter y función de los temas grecolatinos en relación con la teoría poética, el concepto de heroísmo, los factores históricos,la visión sobre los mexicanos, las descripciones de paisajes, la datación mítica del tiempo y las escenas de género. El tratamiento de estos tópicos,con independencia de su carácter convencional, apunta no sólo a las fuentes literarias del poema, sino también a una valoración ideológico-religiosa de la Antigüedad.
