A partir de fuentes hasta ahora inexploradas, este artículo reconstruye el escándalo que se desató durante el juicio de residencia del virrey Revillagigedo en 1795, cuando José Antonio de Alzate, editor de la Gaceta de Literatura de México, presentó una acusación sumamente grave: al ordenar la remoción de la estatua del rey Fernando VI de la Plaza Mayor el antiguo virrey habría cometido poco menos que un regicidio. El estudio de los debates que se sucedieron a medida que escalaba la situación propone una lectura política de la Ilustración novohispana que articula las cuestiones intelectuales a los conflictos sociales.
