Focusing on the provinces of Chiapas and Guatemala and making use of previously-unknown documents, this article sheds light on aspects of the history of Milpa Courts that have remained obscure and reveals how demographic, economic and social transformations in both provinces modified the original function of these courts and eventually led to their disappearance. |

Los oficiales que gobernaron los territorios americanos de la Monarquía Hispánica establecieron mecanismos compulsivos para que los indios participasen activamente en los mercados. En la década de 1550, se fundó en el reino de Guatemala una institución para obligar a los pueblos a producir excedentes agrícolas con la finalidad de que las ciudades estuviesen bien abastecidas de cereales y legumbres: nos referimos a los Juzgados de Milpas. Enfocando nuestra atención enlas provincias de Chiapas y de Guatemala, y valiéndonos de documentos inéditos, en este artículo buscamos precisar algunos aspectos todavía oscuros sobre la historia de los Juzgados de Milpas, y mostrar cómo las transformaciones demográficas, económicas y sociales que vivieron ambas provincias cambiaron la función original de dichos juzgados y, a la postre, provocaron su desaparición.
