El artículo tiene como objetivo comprender cómo se dirimían los conflictos derivados del cobro del tributo de los pueblos de la Corona en los tribunales novohispanos del siglo XVII. A partir de lo cual, se aborda el vínculo entre la figura del juez contador de tributos con otros jueces con jurisdicción delegada de hacienda: los jueces comisarios y los jueces ejecutores para, posteriormente, estudiar cómo se realizaban los juicios de ejecución de deudas en contra de los principales recaudadores del tributo indígena: los gobernadores. Finalmente, se trata una de las vías procesales con las cuales se podían revertir o moderar las sentencias dictadas por los jueces contadores de tributos: la petición ante el Juzgado General de Indios.
