Through these sources, the two books characterize the meaning of the Iberian conquests as a transplantation of the peninsular order. Second, they coincide on Turnerian historiographic criteria that glorifies the frontier experiences of São Paulo and the United States as Americanization through autocolonization. Using this criteria, these authors criticize the inauthenticity or insularity of Ibero-America and instead propose the historical perspective of continental formation. This article contributes to staging a dialogue between two major works of twentieth-century Latin American historiography whose affinities remain unexplored. |

Este texto propone un acercamiento de Visión del paraíso, de Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, a La invención de América, de Edmundo O’Gorman. Dos paralelos significativos son destacados. Primero, el interés común en fuentes en que sobresalía el escepticismo frente a las creencias vigentes, motivos edénicos aplicados a Brasil o preceptos geocéntricos aplicados a las nuevas tierras. A partir de esas fuentes, los dos libros caracterizan el sentido de las conquistas ibéricas como trasplantación del orden peninsular. Segundo, la coincidencia en un criterio historiográfico turneriano por medio del cual se ensalzan las experiencias fronterizas de São Paulo y de Estados Unidos, pensadas como americanización por autocolonización. Con ese criterio, los autores critican la inautenticidad o insularidad histórica de Iberoamérica y proponen la formación continental como horizonte histórico. El estudio contribuye a poner en contacto dos obras capitales de la historiografía latinoamericana del siglo XX cuyas afinidades siguen inexploradas.
