Their frequent correspondence reveals the responsibility the father felt for his sons, as well as a certain feeling of guilt for their leaving home to live in a distant country at such a young age. These letters are rich in advice and recommendations, expressing paternal feelings and reflections. Together, these letters provide a glimpse of the tension between tradition and modernity in Rafael Uribe Uribe’s fatherhood. |

Rafael Uribe Uribe, uno de los políticos liberales más importantes en la Colombia del tránsito del siglo XIX al siglo XX, escribió cerca de 250 cartas a sus hijos Julián Uribe Gaviria y Carlos Eduardo Uribe Gaviria entre marzo de 1905 y noviembre de 1906. En ese entonces fungía como embajador de Colombia en Brasil y sus dos hijos estudiaban en la Escuela Militar de Santiago de Chile. La asidua correspondencia deja entrever la responsabilidad que el padre sentía por sus dos hijos y cierta culpa por haberlos extraído del hogar en edades tan tempranas y haberlos conducido a un país lejano. El contenido de las cartas es rico en consejos y recomendaciones, expresión de sentimientos y diversas reflexiones paternales.
