El objeto de este estudio es el tema de la familia, elemento esencial de toda construcción social, ya abordado desde diferentes ángulos por medio de la historia, junto al de la esclava, que ha sido desvirtuado, denostado e incluso negado, bajo supuestos “mantos” académicos. Esta representación ha incidido en que se continúen repitiendo, como verdades absolutas, mitos que la realidad de esos y otros estudios históricos se han ocupado de deconstruir. El presente estudio muestra las características que asumió en Cuba, tanto desde el punto de vista consanguíneo como por afinidad. Las fuentes utilizadas combinan documentos de archivo y normas de legislación.
