| description | This article traces and analyzes representations of the Argentine ruling elite in terms of developments on the religious terrain, in the country and in the world, from 1862 to 1916. The chronological starting point is the year of national unification and the end point that of the election of President Hipólito Yrigoyen through universal male vote, secret and obligatory. These are the decades that Argentine historiography understands as the period of national organization (1862-1880) and of conservative order (1880-1916). The sources used include parliamentary debates and the annual reports of the Department of Worship, which formed part of the Ministry of Justice, Worship and Public Instruction until 1899 and part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after that date. The speeches of these ministers and parliamentarians allow us to understand their diagnostics of the transformations underway and the meanings they assigned to certain political concepts that were closely connected to the religious question, such as sovereignty, democracy, nation and citizenry. |

Este artículo rastrea y analiza las representaciones de las élites dirigentes argentinas de cuanto estaba ocurriendo en el terreno religioso, en el país y en el mundo, entre 1862 y 1916. El punto de partida cronológico es el año de la unificación nacional y el de llegada el de la elección como presidente de la República de Hipólito Yrigoyen mediante el sufragio universal masculino, obligatorio y secreto. Se trata, pues, de las décadas que en la historiografía argentina se conocen como periodo de la organización nacional (1862-1880) y del orden conservador (1880-1916). Las fuentes a que hemos acudido para su elaboración son los debates parlamentarios y las memorias anuales del Departamento de Culto, que hasta 1899 dependió del Ministerio de Justicia, Culto e Instrucción Pública y a partir de esa fecha del de Relaciones Exteriores. Los discursos de esos hombres, ministros y parlamentarios, nos permiten advertir sus diagnósticos de las transformaciones en curso y los significados que atribuían a ciertos conceptos políticos estrechamente vinculados a la cuestión religiosa, como los de soberanía, democracia, nación y ciudadanía.
