| description | This article analyzes the official participation of the Spanish government in the centennial of the consummation of Mexican independence at a particularly challenging time for their bilateral relationship, as their political projects and socioeconomic proposals did not coincide. As the Mexican government was not recognized by the United States and many European powers at the time, these festivities became an opportunity to offer the image of a civilized country, at peace, one that was rebuilding its economy and deserved international trust. There have been many studies on these festivities, but none on the diplomatic aspect or the Spanish role. Besides leadership in Latin America, Spain sought the protection of its subjects in Mexico, which in turn offered guarantees in a political and economic environment in which it was very difficult to keep this promise. Despite the many obstacles, the two countries managed to overcome the differences separating them. Memoirs, the contemporary press and the diplomatic archives of Spain and Mexico have been consulted. |

Este trabajo analiza la participación oficial del gobierno español en las fiestas del Centenario de la Consumación de la Independencia en un momento difícil de las relaciones entre España y México, pues no coincidían en proyectos políticos ni propuestas socioeconómicas. Como México no contaba con el reconocimiento de Estados Unidos ni el de las grandes potencias europeas, la conmemoración fue una oportunidad para ofrecer la imagen de un país civilizado, en paz, en plena reconstrucción económica, en el que internacionalmente se podía confiar. Esta celebración ha merecido muchos estudios, pero ninguno analiza el aspecto diplomático o el caso español. España buscaba, además de un liderazgo en América Latina, la protección de sus súbditos en México, y éste ofrecía garantías en un ambiente político y económico en el que era muy difícil cumplir el compromiso. Los dos países lograron sobrellevar la situación a pesar de las diferencias que los separaban. Se han consultado memorias, prensa y archivos diplomáticos de España y México.
