En este artículo se analizan los discursos sobre la protección de la infancia, la maternidad y la familia que se desarrollaron en los círculos académicos de la medicina y la influencia que éstos tuvieron en los informes de las trabajadoras sociales de la Junta Central de Asistencia Pública de Quito en los años cuarenta del siglo XX; en estos informes se hace una lectura de la realidad de las madres solteras y la ilegitimidad de sus hijos desde imaginarios del deber ser de las madre y las mujeres casadas.
