Este trabajo explora los orígenes de la ley de inmigración de México de 1909, una norma preocupada por la selección de extranjeros indeseables por motivos raciales, pero donde se justificó la regulación de ciertos flujos demográficos por los potenciales riesgos a la salud pública. Analiza la circulación de saberes médicos en reuniones internacionales y las prácticas de Estados Unidos y México para controlar la enfermedad ocular del tracoma, que se asociaba con la llegada de extranjeros. Se destaca el caso mexicano para mostrar la apropiación que hicieron los médicos de la inspección médica a inmigrantes chinos en los puertos de Salina Cruz y Hong Kong.
