El presente artículo analiza aspectos poco conocidos de la trayectoria de José María Gutiérrez de Estrada. Su objetivo principal es exponer la influencia del contexto europeo posrevolucionario de 1848 en las ideas de este campechano. Con base en fuentes de archivo inéditas, se sacarán a la luz los contactos directos de Gutiérrez de Estrada con el español Juan Donoso Cortés y el francés Louis Veuillot, para quienes el papel de la Iglesia y del papado en lo político adquirió un lugar cada vez más central y preeminente. El ensayo se propone profundizar en el personaje de Gutiérrez de Estrada y ofrecer nuevas consideraciones en el estudio de la evolución de los proyectos monárquicos para México.
