| description | This article is based on the testimony of Juan de Latre y Aysa, an Aragonese sailor with great military experience and cartographic knowledge, who improved upon the British maps that were used by the Royal Company of the Philippines. A businessman, he sailed for the Company, profiting off of non-freight goods on the voyages to Rio de la Plata. His background, local roots and global experience made him a military actor at the edges of the Spanish Empire, his testimonies taking on importance for their reading of the world. The testimonies of his career are a combination of “factualities” and agency: records and testimonies of military service, navigation logs in his own hand, accounts by his fellow sailors, memorials, documented evidence of events and expressions of the subjectivities in play. Together, they have allowed us to unite fragments, not without seams, to reveal a life that oscillated between chance and necessity. |

El ensayo se ocupa del testimonio de Juan de Latre y Aysa, marino aragonés que sumó experiencia militar al conocimiento cartográfico para enmendar las estimaciones de las cartas británicas que servían de guía a la Compañía de Filipinas. Hombre de negocios, sirvió navegando para la Compañía, de la que obtuvo ganancias en el “comercio de pacotilla” con efectos orientales, en viajes al Río de la Plata. Su linaje, arraigo local y experiencia global lo hicieron un actor de la guerra en los bordes del Imperio español, donde sus testimonios cobran importancia por su lectura del mundo. Los testimonios de esa trayectoria son una combinatoria de “factualidades” y agencia: registros y testimonios de servicios militares, bitácoras de navegación de propia mano, relaciones de eventos por compañeros de armas, memoriales y evidencias documentadas de hechos vitales y algunas expresiones de subjetividades en juego. La suma nos ha permitido unir fragmentos para revelar, no sin costuras, una vida que osciló entre el azar y la necesidad.
